Worker remittances cap highest in four years with US$ 6.6bn coming in
  • Sri Lanka's remittances in 2024 hit a record $6.58 billion, fueled by increased migration, festive season inflows, and improved exchange rate policies.

Sri Lankan workers abroad sent home a record-breaking US$ 613.8 million in December 2024, marking the highest monthly remittance since 2020 and contributing to the year's total of US$ 6,575.4 million, a 10.1% increase from 2023. This significant inflow, driven by the festive season and back-to-school expenses, surpassed the previous high of US$ 572.4 million recorded in March. The growth in remittances reflects the abandonment of the fixed exchange rate in March 2022, stricter controls on informal money channels like Undiyal and Hawala, and a rise in Sri Lankans migrating for better opportunities, with at least a million leaving the country over the past three years. This resurgence follows years of reduced inflows when workers opted for informal channels or limited remittances as a protest against unfavorable measures.
